âGentlemen,â Myles Keogh was off duty and lounging in an expensive smoking jacket when Grand and Batchelor knocked on his door. âTo what do I owe the pleasure?â
âTrooper McGee,â Grand said. âOne of yours, I believe?â
âWell, now,â Keoghâs smile was tight. âIn the light of what we now know, Iâm not so sure.â
âShe was a member of I Company?â Batchelorâs face was stony. Keogh looked at him.
âShe was,â the captain said, âand already Iâm having difficulty with that concept.â He ushered them to comfortable seats. âIâll be looking at all my troopers more carefully from now on.â
âIt goes without saying, I assume, that you had no idea?â Batchelor had to raise the question.
âThat McGee was a woman?â Keogh handed round the cigars. âOf course not.â He rang a little silver bell on the table and Bugler Dobbs appeared, ramrod straight and ready to serve. âCoffee, gentlemen? I donât approve of anything stronger at this hour of the morning â youâve had breakfast, I presume?â
âWe have,â Grand said. âAnd thank you.â
âThree coffees, Dobbs,â Keogh said. âThen make yourself scarce. These gentlemen and I have things to discuss.â
âVery good, sir.â Dobbs saluted and scuttled off into the kitchen, clattering pots and pans. Buglers like him were in short supply â a man whose job it was to communicate, but who knew when to shut up and when not to hear. Buglers like him were all three wise monkeys, rolled into one. At least, that was how Bugler Dobbs saw himself.
âWhat do you know about McGee?â Batchelor asked Keogh.
The captain twirled his cigar for a while, then said, âIâm intrigued to know your interest in all this, Mr Batchelor â other than the prurient, I suppose.â
âPrurience has nothing to do with it, Captain,â Batchelor snapped. âI happened to be with Charley Reynolds when we found McGee, out on the prairie.â
Keogh narrowed his eyes. âYou donât much like the Irish, do you, Mr Batchelor?â He was smiling, but Grand felt uneasy.
âThe Irish, Captain Keogh,â Batchelor said, âspend a lot of their time blowing up parts of my home town, not to mention Manchester. Youâll forgive me if Iâm a little partisan in such matters.â
âI will,â Keogh said, âbut Iâm not sure Iâll forgive you for the potato famine.â
âYou were telling us about Trooper McGee.â Grand thought it was time to intervene.
Slowly, Keogh turned his gaze to the American. âSo I was. Ah, Dobbs, thank you. Find Lonesome Charley for me, will you? Tell him Iâd like a word.â
âYessir.â Dobbs saluted and left.
âReynolds doesnât say a great deal but what he does say is worth listening to.â Keogh poured the coffee. âIâll be mother,â he said, winking, âwith all due respect to Trooper McGee.â
âHow long had he ⦠she ⦠been with the Seventh?â Grand asked.
âJoined in â73 if memory serves,â Keogh said, âin Kentucky. A paper-hanger before that. Apprentice and all.â
âWhy the army?â Batchelor asked.
Keogh laughed. âDo you want me to answer that one, Captain Grand?â he said. âOr will you?â
âFor me, it was a means of getting out from under my fatherâs business,â Grand shrugged.
